if you find a very excellent jeweler they should be able to take out the 18k and replace it in the metal settin that you want.
Now I’m not a jeweler, but I believe you would have to choose another setting, and have the stones placed into the colorless gold band. Try visiting a jeweler if no jewelers or knowledgeable persons can answer this one.
nope it can’t be. or at least i would not advise it. why not take the diamonds and have the same ring made in colorless gold which would be cheaper then platinum? since you have the diamonds already it shouldn’t cost more than $4000. for both. most jewelry stores can give you any assess. if u are smart then you would question for the ancient gold 18k and sell it use the cash for ur deposit towards the new rings.
I don’t know how much it would cost, but you would have to get the stones reset in a colorless gold or platinum setting. Now and again jewelers will run resetting specials. You can always trade in the metal on the price of the new settings. Just find a dependable jeweler. A friend of mine is a goldsmith, and he always allows the customer to watch when he sets their stones so they know the stones weren’t switched.
Your wife will like such a wonderful gift!
No sorry man that is sort of like adage that your wife wants to keep her Chevy but she wants it to turn into a Ford.
I don’t know whether a jeweler will dip your ring. If they can, I reckon that they probably aren’t the best jeweler….seems fishy to me.
I’d go to a jeweler and look at their settings. Find one that is the same or very similar to the one that you currently have and have the jeweler reset the diamonds.
Even if it were possible to “dip” a ring, it would be so much more expensive! If you have them take the diamonds out of your current ring and place them in a new ring, then they can melt down the yellow gold and keep it in exchange for a discount on your new settings and the labor involved in setting your diamonds. If you just dip your ancient ring (which, as I said, I’m not sure is even possible), then you are paying for the new colorless gold/platinum AND you still have that yellow gold underneath! Unless they aren’t dipping it in real metal and are just dipping the yellow gold in something that will turn it colorless….in which case, there is something VERY incorrect. It shouldn’t be possible to just dip yellow gold in something and have it change color. Colorless gold has a uncommon chemical composition from yellow gold. You have to really melt yellow gold down and add stuff to it (I reckon nickel?) in peacefulness to make it colorless.
I’m not a jeweler. I may possibly be really incorrect, but I’d just go with finding a similar setting. Unless your ancient rings were antiques (in which case you DEFINITELY shouldn’t mess with them!), the style is probably still around somewhere or is easily recreated by a skilled jeweler.
Just buy a new setting for the diamonds you have. Then have the gold made into another item she can keep forever.
No…..any kind of plating will not last.
You need groundbreaking new settings in the metal of your choice…the diamonds in the original set can be re-set into the new settings.
Yes, yellow gold can certainly be dipped in rhodium, is it recommended? Some say no. It really will depend on the setting, naturally stones aren’t removed. Though, will it last, no, not permanently. The rhodium will wear, and you will need to redip. It takes years to wear down. Cost of a rhodium dip, 20-100 dollars. To buy a platinum setting and have it reset, may possibly be 1000, if it were a solitaire only, then easily half that. Take to a jeweler and question an opinion, be sure its a jeweler, not just a jewelery store. Look for advertisements in the phone book of a jeweler on site, these places will advertise same day work. A colorless gold setting would cost 500-700.
